Performance

The performance capabilities of the Elantra and the Sonata for 2021 vary considerably. The Elantra is available with two gas engines and a hybrid engine across six trims, and the Sonata is offered with two gas engines across four trims. One of the Elantra’s engines is a 147-horsepower, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine. The other one is a 201-horsepower, four-cylinder, 1.6-liter turbo engine. In comparison, one of the engines in the 2021 Sonata is a 191-horsepower, four-cylinder, 2.5-liter design. The other possibility is a 180-horsepower, four-cylinder, 1.6-liter turbo engine.

Appearance

If you are searching for a sedan that stands apart from others, you will not be disappointed with the impressive styling of the Sonata or the Elantra for the new model year. In contrast, these vehicles have familial traits across the exterior; the Elantra's smaller stature results in a shorter nose and a sharper angle on the rear windshield. The Elantra’s side definition also has a modest angle, and this is compared to the relatively horizontal definition across the Sonata’s sides. The wheel styles vary across both vehicles on a trim-by-trim basis.

Features

Many of the exciting features found in the 2021 Hyundai Elantra’s trim lineup are also in the Sonata. These may include up to a 10.25-inch display screen, collision avoidance assistance, voice recognition, heat and memory functions in the front row, and others. In select trims, the 2021 Sonata adds a few optional or included features that are not in the Elantra. These include wireless device charging, a surround-view monitor, and others.
