Hope On Wheels
Doing Good Things, Together.
At Wolfchase Hyundai, we focus on making the world a better place today and in the future.
The Story of a Single Handprint
Hyundai Hope on Wheels, or HHOW, developed from a grassroots initiative of several New England-area auto dealerships. Specifically, the dealerships teamed up in 1998 to support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Jimmy Fund. This one-time effort was immediately popular, and it rapidly expanded into the nationwide HHOW organization. This 501 (c)(3) organization is a non-profit group that focuses on pediatric cancer research. Specifically, a portion of every vehicle sold by Hyundai Motor America and more than 830 Hyundai dealerships across the country is donated to HHOW. By 2017, the Hyundai Hope on Wheels foundation had collected and disbursed more than $130 million to promote U.S.-based pediatric cancer research. This continues to grow regularly.
The Importance of Pediatric Cancer Research
Hyundai Motor America and all Hyundai dealerships focus on consistently working toward better products and services, and they also focus on improving society. We believe that all children should enjoy learning, playing, and growing without concern about cancer. Unfortunately, cancer is a leading cause of death for children in the United States. A new pediatric cancer diagnosis is determined approximately every 36 months. By supporting cancer research, we hope to make a difference in pediatric cancer survival rates.
Approximately 4 percent of federal funds allocated for cancer research is specifically for pediatric cancers. However, thanks to the research that has been conducted between the 1950s and today, the survival rate has increased to 80 percent. In addition to promoting a higher survival rate, the research funds are used to create easier treatments for their small bodies to handle.
A Leader in Research Grants
To date, Hyundai Hope on Wheels has funded more than 780 grants. These are allocated to more than 280 research projects. There are four unique types of grants available through Hyundai Hope on Wheels. The Hyundai Impact Award is a 1-year, $50,000 grant specifically allocated to pediatric oncology departments at U.S. hospitals. The Young Investigator Grant is a 2-year, $150,000 grant that is specifically allowed to support the research of a pediatric oncologist who is in his or her first seven years on the job. The Hyundai Scholar Hope Grant is a 2-year, $250,000 grant that supports the research of established pediatric oncologists. Advanced research for high-risk cancers is funded through the 4-year, $1-million Hyundai Quantum Award.
Our Focus on Ending Childhood Cancer
At Wolfchase Hyundai, we donated $500,000 in 2019 to St. Jude Hospital. We plan to continue supporting the Hyundai Hope on Wheels program in the years to come. It will take the full community to make a difference in this important cause, and we invite you to get involved.
Being a good Neighbor.
More than anything, a neighborhood is about people. That is why we are committed to building strong neighborhoods together with our community partners. At Hyundai we strive to be a good neighbor in the communities in which we do business and operate.
